Does using a push/fold strategy work in low stakes? Yes - but you need to adjust.

You're likely thinking: my opponents don't play GTO, should I really be jamming this hand? I know they're only jamming the nuts here, am I really supposed to call because a chart tells me to? And you're right. It's important to adjust to make sure you're playing the most profitable strategy - but it needs to be done right.

First, the reassuring part: following the charts works. You'll make more money in some hands and lose more in others, but overall you'll come out on top in the long run. A solved range is not fragile, and it does not stop being profitable because the player in seat four is bad at poker.

However, for players in low stakes who deviate so far from GTO, following the charts isn't the most optimal strategy. You're leaving a lot of money on the table by not adjusting. So how do you do that?

In three steps, and the order matters more than any individual adjustment. You cannot exploit a mistake you cannot name, and you cannot name a mistake without a baseline to measure it against.

Step 1: Understand the baseline strategy

Start by really understanding what chip-EV push/fold strategies look like. What hands should you be jamming from each position at each stack depth? What hands should you be calling off with? What hands should you rejam with? This will serve as your baseline to adjust from, but just as importantly, it will help you identify your opponents' mistakes. Keep tabs on what your opponents are doing. Are they jamming too wide, or too tight? Are they overfolding their big blind? Are they calling stations? This needs to be relative to the GTO strategy you've learned - "loose" is not a feeling, it's a gap between what they did and what the solution says.

Two things worth knowing while you build this baseline. The first is that your effective stack - the shortest stack in the hand, not your own - is what picks the chart, and reading that number wrong means studying the right range for the wrong spot. Step 2: Learn ICM

The first way you get a step up on your low-stakes opponents is to have a thorough understanding of ICM, and how it changes your strategy. Study the ICM charts at different parts of the tournament and see how being at the bubble causes extreme changes in your ranges. Practice them - active learning is better than memorising charts.

The hands that go first are the ones whose chip-EV edge was thinnest: offsuit broadways and the weaker suited gappers, which win a small pot often and end your tournament occasionally. And then watch your opponents and how they play. Most low-stakes opponents don't understand ICM and will be making massive mistakes. This gives you two opportunities.

Don't make any large ICM blunders yourself

Understand that in many spots you need to call off a lot tighter than you normally would. This is the unglamorous half and it is worth more than the exploits: the pot odds on the screen are telling you to call, and on a bubble the real requirement can sit eight points or more above that number. Really understand the mistakes they are making

Identify the exact mistakes they are making. Are they calling off too wide or too tight compared to ICM? What about their jamming ranges? Be specific, because this will give you the best return. "He's a bit loose" is not actionable. "He calls a button jam with any pair and any ace on the bubble, where the solution folds a third of that" is - it tells you which of your hands just became a shove and which just became a fold.

Step 3: Exploit the mistakes your opponents make

Finally, now that you have some real reads on your opponents, you need to adjust to capitalise on their mistakes. If you identified that your opponents fold too much, jam wider. In all three charts every seat except the big blind is still playing GTO, so the whole swing is one read on one player. Against a big blind that folds too often the button jams 10 points wider. Against one that calls too much it tightens by only 2 points.

That asymmetry is the part worth internalising, and it is the most useful single fact on this page for a low-stakes game. Losing fold equity hurts less than gaining it helps, because your hands keep their raw equity when they are called - a suited ace looked up by a calling station is a coinflip, not a disaster. A tight opponent is a much larger licence to widen than a loose opponent is a reason to shut down. If your table read is uncertain, erring wide is the cheaper mistake. Putting it together

Your instinct to adjust and not just follow GTO charts is correct. But you need to be methodical about it, and you still need to understand GTO strategies. Done in order, you get three things:

  • A strong, unexploitable baseline that is profitable on its own.
  • An understanding of exactly what your opponents are doing wrong, stated as a gap from the solution rather than as a hunch.
  • A way to study and practise exactly what you need to do to exploit that - and to know how much, not just which direction.

Skip the first two and step three is just guessing. The players who beat low stakes sustainably are not the ones with the most creative reads; they're the ones who know the baseline well enough that a deviation is a measured decision instead of a feeling.

Common questions

Does push/fold strategy work in low stakes?
Yes, and it is profitable on its own - but it is not the most profitable thing you can do. Following a solved chart beats guessing, and you will come out ahead over a large enough sample. The catch is that low-stakes opponents deviate so far from equilibrium that a balanced range leaves money on the table. The chart is the baseline you adjust from, not the finished strategy.
Should I deviate from push/fold charts against bad players?
Eventually, yes, and deliberately. Your instinct to deviate is correct; deviating on a hunch is not. You need the solved baseline first so you can see precisely what your opponent is doing wrong, then a read specific enough to act on, and only then an adjustment. Skipping straight to step three is just guessing with extra confidence.
Do low-stakes players understand ICM?
Most of them do not, and that is the single largest edge available at these stakes. Players who treat a money bubble like any other hand will call off far too wide and shove into spots where folding is clearly correct. Knowing what the bubble does to a range protects you from the same mistake and tells you exactly which of theirs to attack.
How much should I widen against a player who folds too much?
Substantially, and more than you would tighten in the mirror case. On a solved 6-max 10bb button, a big blind that folds too often takes the shoving range from roughly 40% of hands to around 50%. Against a big blind that calls too much the same range only tightens by a point or two, because your hands keep their raw equity when they are called.
What stack depths does push/fold apply to in low stakes?
Roughly 5bb to 15bb effective, with 10bb sitting in the middle of it. Below about 15bb there is not enough stack behind an open-raise to fold profitably to a 3-bet, so opening and shoving collapse into one decision. The same logic holds at every stake - what changes at low stakes is how far your opponents stray from the solution.
