GTO vs. Exploit: When to Deviate From Balanced Ranges

Every push/fold chart on this site starts from a GTO (game-theory-optimal) solve: a range built so that no adjustment an opponent makes can turn a profit against it. A GTO range doesn't care who's in the big blind - it's balanced against a hypothetical opponent playing perfectly back at you, which makes it the safe default when you don't have reliable information about who you're actually playing against.

What an exploit range gives up

An exploit range throws balance away on purpose. If you know - really know, not guess - that a specific opponent folds too often to a shove, the highest-EV response isn't "stay balanced," it's "shove wider, because most of the extra hands you're adding win by fold equity alone." The tradeoff is that this same wider range becomes losing if that opponent ever adjusts to calling more, since you're no longer protected against that adjustment. Exploit play is a bet that your read is right and durable enough to cash in before the opponent notices and corrects.

A worked example

Every extra hand in the wider range below is a hand that would lose value against a GTO big blind, but gains value against this specific one.

The button's shove range at 10bb effective widens from 40% of hands to 50% once the big blind is tagged as folding too often - 10 percentage points wider than the GTO baseline, with the small blind still playing GTO behind it.

Which one should you play?

Default to GTO until you have a real read: a big sample against one villain, a stat from a HUD, or a documented tendency, not a hunch from one hand. GTO is the range that can never be exploited back - it's the correct baseline, and it's free on this site for every position, stack depth, and table size (6-max and 9-max). Once you have that read, an exploit range converts it into extra EV that a balanced range leaves on the table by design.

How much that is worth depends on who you're playing. In low stakes the deviations are large and frequent enough that the exploit range is most of the edge - push/fold strategy for low stakes walks through the order to build it in, baseline first.
